change the number of posts per page in the home page grid?

I am showing a grid of posts on my home page and am using a 3 column layout.
By default the number of posts displayed per page is 10, so I end up with the bottom row of the grid only having one post (see example in link).

Can I change the number of posts displayed either up to 12 or down to 9?

    Please, try heading over to SettingsReading. Is the Posts Per Page value currently set to 10?
