Change link title for icons in Vantage social media widget

Hi,

I already saw threads saying that the circle icons cannot have a link title added to them. However, I have a similar, but slightly different question:

I’m using the Vantage social media widget for displaying social media profiles of different brands/products, and not just our own (see link attached). Also, I am using one of the icons to display “the website” – currently that’s Github because I’m sure it won’t be used, but I found the way of changing the icon to the globe, to represent the website.
However, this widget is meant to display only the website’s social media, and hence the link titles are as follows:
“Site name Twitter”
“Site name Facebook”
etc.

First of all, I would like to remove the “site name” from there (since they are not leading to our fb and twitter pages, but those of different brands), and secondly, I’d like to find a way to change one of the icons to say “website”.

I guess what I’m asking here is whether someone can point me to the right file where I can change these settings.

Thank you!
Best,
Lana

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Lana

    Thanks for your support.

The Vantage Social widget is unfortunately not something that’s easy for us to edit/tweak or adjust. In this case I think it would be a lot easier to find a plugin that works out the box. You could for example take a look at something very similar called Simple Social Icons:

Hi Andrew, thanks a lot for the reply.

I usually avoid adding more plugins – if a similar one is already bundled with the theme or another plugin that I’m using, simply in order to keep the code on the site at minimum.

I checked the plugin you suggested, and I see it does not have an icon for “website”, so a little hack to get that displayed would still need to be made. (Btw, in the Vantage social media widget I did this with one line in additional CSS and it does the job).
Here’s the final version of the site, went live last night: http://www.purpleorchidpharma.com/multi-mam/

Could you please let me know what is the file that controls the display of the link title for icons in Vantage social media widget, since I’d still prefer to fiddle with this one’s code, rather than install a new one and then have to do the same?

    Thank you!
    Best,
    Lana

    Hi, I Work Here

For sure, I can appreciate that approach.

Modifying this widget is unfortunately beyond the scope we can currently assist with. If you’d like to jump in at a code level yourself you can find the widget at /inc/widgets.php and the premium extension of this widget at /premium/inc/widgets.php. Keep in mind that changes made directly to theme files will be lost during theme updates and a child theme should be used in the case of modifications. However with functionality like this it’s unfortunately not as simple as copying these files over to the child theme. Just giving you a heads up there.

In the event you’re ever after development support we’d recommend http://codeable.io/.

Sorry I don’t have more here.

    Thanks, Andrew!

I’ll take a look at the code, and decide whether it’ll be something I’ll just keep doing with every update, or is it not worth it :)

It is kind of a specific situation, so I can’t expect it to be included in some of the future updates, I suppose. But doesn’t matter, I’ll find my way around it.

Thank you for a wonderful theme and wonderful plugin, anyway!

    Best,
    Lana
