Cannot log onto WP Admin Dashboard – Not a WP problem?

Hi again,

This morning I planned to re-build a site, but this time using a child theme, so as to avoid the vulnerabilities as Andrew outlined above. However, I cannot login to the admin panel. I have tried all manner of means to do so – FTP to the folders and disabling the Vantage Premium theme, plugins etc. I still get a kind of 404 message using the theme saying “That page can’t be found.” or there is a re-direct loop. I have not touched anything on the dashboard since I was last in there. Could this be a theme issue (as I didn’t use a child theme to begin with)?

The site is at http://www.balletandoperaireland.com/.

I have tried renaming the .htaccess file. When I do so, I get a 403 error.

Many thanks,

Bryan

    Hi Bryan

Can I confirm you’ve de-activated all plugins at once?

    Hi Andrew,

As I don’t want to leave the site running without the plugins, I do it momentarily. FTPing to the folder, renaming it (thereby disabling all at once), quickly checking if I can log in (I can’t) and then change the name back on the plugin folder.

    Hi, I Work Here

Ok thanks for confirming. I’m digging around with you on this one, it’s not something I’ve worked through before. Please can you check permissions as indicated on this thread here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14532520/redirect-loop-on-wp-admin-or-wp-login-php.

Failing that there are a few more options to run over here: http://www.milessebesta.com/web-design/endless-wordpress-loop/.

At the end of this investigation a re-installation of WordPress might be the required action.

    Hi Andrew,

Great spot. The permissions had defaulted to 000. I changed them to 644 and like the dude on Stack Overflow, I was in. I’m puzzled as to why this should have happened? Sorry to have even doubted it may have been the theme, but without having used the child theme, I wondered if not being able to update plugins etc. it may have caused a problem.

I am going for a fresh re-build (with the all important Child Theme) on a new server as I don’t want to copy files. The good news for you guys is that I have to buy another instance of the Vantage Premium theme! :)

    Much appreciated Andrew,

    Bryan

    Hi, I Work Here

Really glad we sorted that out. You don’t need to upgrade again if it’s just a move but if you’re running a second instance then we do ask that you upgrade again. To confirm, your license isn’t tied to a particular site, we just ask that you run one production site per license.

I’m unfortunately a little out of my depth as to why that permissions change happened. Sorry I don’t have more on that point.

If needs be please check out my moving Page Builder content thread. https://siteorigin.com/thread/id-like-to-move-my-website-thats-using-page-builder-whats-the-best-method/. TLDR is either use Tools > Export or the Duplicator plugin but unfortunately not DB export/import at this time.

    Thanks
