How do I add a border to the theme, I tried putting code into the custom css file.

body .site {
border: 3px solid #333;
}

But it did not work.

    Please try the following under Appearance > Custom CSS:

    #page-wrapper {border: 3px solid #333;margin-bottom: 20px;}#colophon {margin-bottom: 0;}

    (Please kindly note that we work from Cape Town, South Africa at GMT+2 and usually don’t operate over the weekends)
