Big mess after updating vantage premium theme

Hi SiteOrigin Team,

I just updated my Vantage Premium Theme and now my website looks – to be honest – horrible!

The Update set all my changes to default and now my website is as you can imagine, a really big mess.

I had to contact my hosting partner to get the latest backup which will take at least 24 hours until everything works properly again!

I really expected more of a usually perfect WordPress Theme that I also payed for.

Besides of all the trouble I’m having right now I also have two questions:

First: Is it normal that a Theme-Update destroys all the setting or am I the only person this happens to?

Second: Can I do Theme-Updates in the future or do I have to stick with my version of the Vantage Premium Theme forever and always?

Thank you for your answers

Regards,

a currently not so happy customer

    Same here!
After the update my “parent”-theme folder is empty!

    Hi Andrew,

thank you for your quick answer.

My site is still under construction and I wanted to go online with it tomorrow morning. I just did a late check if everything is ready and updated the plugin.

My URL is heissehimbeeren.com and I’m setting it online in 2 minutes for you to check it out.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks for the update.

Have you ever made changes via the Appearance > Editor menu item in WordPress?

  7. 9 years, 10 days ago AnnelieChristiane

I did a lot of changes via the customize option and of course designed my own menu but I didn’t change anything more than is visible in the menu editor anyway. Which changes do you mean in particular?

  8. 9 years, 10 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks. None of the changes made via Appearance > Customize or Appearance > Theme Settings should have changed. Your database looks to have reset the options table that the theme uses. In several years doing this, I’ve never seen that happen on update. There is no way to recover from within the theme or by rolling back. All the theme update does is replace the theme files. The update doesn’t run any database operations which is where this style data is stored.

Please, send a set of temporary login details and I’ll take a quick look around.

If your host can roll back it will work to restore. We can then login and try establish what happened.

    Hi, I Work Here

Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look? You can create the account with the following email address:

    [email protected]

Just navigate to Users > Add New in your WordPress admin. Enter siteorigin for the username and [email protected] for the email address. Make sure you’ve selected Administrator for the role and enabled the “Send Password” field so we receive the details.

Once we’re finished taking a look, you can delete this account. We’ll let you know when to do that.

I did, thanks. I’ll take a look now.

    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks. There isn’t thing I can see from the plugin side that would do this.

To confirm, there isn’t anything in Vantage that has the potential to reset the options table in the WordPress database. At this stage, we unfortunately, have no idea how this happened. When you next chat to 1&1 hosting support, please, ask them if they’ve ever run into theme options being completely reset. Perhaps they can shed some light on the challenge.

Let me know what they say and how the roll back goes. We’re back online tomorrow and will do our best to assist from there.

Thank you very much for your nice and very quick support!

I’m talking to 1&1 tomorrow and try to bring back my old design with the server backup.
I’ll also ask them if they ever dealt with somthing like this.

If there is anything new, I’ll let you know.

  17. 9 years, 10 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks for your understanding.

Let’s see where we land tomorrow and go from there. If they have no idea why this happened then, before they run the backup, it might be worth doing a test. The test would be:

    1. Manually roll back to Vantage 2.4.2.
    2. Save a few Customizations at Appearance > Customize > Theme Design.
    3. Run the update to 2.4.4 from Dashboard > Updates. See if the problem repeats.
    4. If the problem repeats we could try the same process with all non-SiteOrigin plugins OFF and see if we get a different result.

I can work through the above pretty quickly. Let me know what hosting support say and we’ll do our best from there.

    Chat then :)

How do you roll back to Vantage 2.4.2? I posted a thread with the same problem and haven’t found a fix yet.

    • 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
      Hi, I Work Here

      Hi Joy

I’ll pick your thread up shortly. Thanks.

  19. 9 years, 9 days ago AnnelieChristiane

    Hi Andrew,

I just talked to 1&1 and unfortunately, I had the feeling that the guy I was talking to had less knowledge about running a website with WordPress than I have… So he wasn’t a big help.

Before I’m starting to rebuilt the design of my website manually I want to run the test you mentioned above.
But how do I get the earlier Version of Vantage?

  20. 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for the update. Running the test is a good idea. Here is the 2.4.2 ZIP:

    Private Snippet

  21. 9 years, 9 days ago AnnelieChristiane

I just tried to upload the file and now WordPress says, that the upload failed.

    Any ideas?

  22. 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

    Some things to check:

Did you switch to another theme first?
    Did you delete Vantage?
Is the file you’re uploading a ZIP file?

  23. 9 years, 9 days ago AnnelieChristiane

Oh okay, now the upload was successful. I also made some random changes.

Now I want to update the Theme but unter updates there is no update vor Vantage displayed…

  24. 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

Do you have an order number inserted at Appearance > Theme Settings > Premium?

    Private Snippet

Have you checked Dashboard > Updates?

If the above has completed then the problem is most likely that we’re currently throttling the uptake of this version. That’s to say only about 20% of users are currently receiving the update. Throttling was only turned on yesterday after the initial release.

  25. 9 years, 9 days ago AnnelieChristiane

Yes, I have the ordernumber. And there are no updates under the “updates” area in the Dashboard.

Is there any other way to finish the test?

  26. 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

One moment. Let me see if we can turn off traffic splitting for a little bit.

  27. 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

    Check Updates now, thanks.

  28. 9 years, 9 days ago AnnelieChristiane

    Done :)

    Hi, I Work Here

Looks like your Customizations were correctly carried through during this update.

  30. 9 years, 9 days ago AnnelieChristiane

Thank you for providing the update :)

Okay, I did the upload and this time it looks like everything stayed the way I changed it.

What do you recommend for future updates?

  31. 9 years, 9 days ago Andrew Misplon
    Hi, I Work Here

    Super, that’s good news.

You’re welcome to get in touch next time there is an update. We can run a basic CSS update for you.

If anything else comes up, please, let me know.

Okay, I will get in touch with you when the next update is available.

Thank you a thousand times for your really great support! It was a pleasure, working with you :)

    Super, chat then :)

Thanks for your understanding and patience. All the best with your site.

Hello, I just updated my theme as well and am getting several layout and server updating errors. I will try to roll back to 4.2.2

  35. 9 years, 2 days ago Scott Esposto

My best guess as im debugging is that the theme upgrade causes a plugin conflict with another plugin, perhaps a slider or menu. I disabled all caches and am now working through each plugin.

  36. 9 years, 1 day ago Scott Esposto

I localized the issue I was having to the YouTube embed plugin by EmbedPlus Team, v10.8.

I’m now running the latest Vantage update and everything seems to be ok. Just 1 small menu padding issue Ill open a new ticket for.
    Thanks.

      Hi, I Work Here

Thanks Scott. Chat in your new thread.

  37. 9 years, 1 day ago Philip.Brooks

We too were hit with this issue. Nailed the culprit to having a responsive layout + layout bound to “full width” results in a blowout from the css:

    .layout-full .panel-row-style.panel-row-style-wide-grey, .layout-full .panel-row-style.panel-row-style-full-width, .layout-full.panels-style-force-full .panel-row-style {
    	margin: 0 -1000px;
    	padding: 25px 1000px;
    }

Changing the 1000’s fixes the issue.

      Hi, I Work Here

      Hi Philip

If you’d like to open a new thread we can assist there. Making changes directly to style.css won’t survive an update, just a quick reminder on that point.

      Thanks

      • 9 years, 1 day ago Philip.Brooks

Thanks Andrew. That’s ok, adding a bit of CSS into the wordpress css editor fixed it and i’ll just test it next release to see if it’s still needed. Just was posting so others could see a quick workaround.
