Background stretches?

By KLGates, 5 years ago. Last reply by Alex S, 5 years ago.

Hi the old web developer died and I am trying to fix some pages on my friend’s site.
The site uses a child of the Vantage theme.

Here is my problem: Whenever I edit the pages, the background suddenly gets stretched.

This is how it should look (page I have not edited recently): https://watermakesuswet.ucsc.edu/directors-statement/
Here is a page I recently edited the content (but did not touch any other settings) and the background is all stretchy: https://watermakesuswet.ucsc.edu

I am using page builder on these pages. Is that the problem? What do I do about it?

Thank you for any help you can provide!

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi K,

The background is different on the two pages because one page is significantly longer than the other. This sizing difference is resulting in the background sizing being different as the background is stretching to ensure it is the same height as the page. This is happening as a result of setting your background image to cover. To avoid this, you’ll need to change the background image layout setting. To do this please navigate to WP AdminAppearanceCustomize, Theme DesignPage and set Page Background Image Layout to Default. How does that look?

Please note that due to the background not being set to cover, the background won’t be the length of the page.

Hi Aex: Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly!

I have done two things, neither of which worked:
    • I added some blue on the bottom of the background image and reuploaded at the Customize page you suggested.
    • I also also set page background image layout to default.

Perhaps the original site guy did something in the css? I looked at the source code but cannot make heads or tails of it.

Aha! Yes found the custom css had set “cover” as the background-image for desktop.
    That fixed it, thanks again.
