Menu Description in Vantage Free Theme

Hi, and thanks for all the great work the SiteOrigin team does.

I need to include the menu description on the main menu of our site to show a second language and have tried following the previous (very old) instructions found here: https://siteorigin.com/thread/enable-menu-description/

I’ve done the following but am not getting the description to appear:

Uploaded and activated Vantage Child Theme
The menu descriptions field is active and has data (was working on previous theme)
Added the recommended code to the functions file
Created a menu.php file in a directory named “inc” within the child theme (I figured this change to the instructions is needed is due to 4 years worth of changes/updates to the Vantage theme structure) and added the recommended code

As I’m not much of a programmer, I can’t think of anything else to try. Am I close?

If not, and if it’s not practical to make these changes, is there another SiteOrigin theme that does have the menu descriptions enabled?

Thanks again,
Nathan

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Nathan

    Thanks for reaching out.

Looks like a bit of team miscommunication on the thread you’ve linked to. Unfortunately, this is beyond our free support scope. It’s something we could try to assist with within our SiteOrigin Premium support scope. If you’d like to try to troubleshoot the customization on your own you might try these two guides:

    https://themefoundation.com/menu-item-descriptions/
    https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/how-to-add-menu-descriptions-in-your-wordpress-themes/

It’s hard to say if you’re close without taking an in-depth look at the task.

If you need professional help, we recommend giving codeable.io a try.

If you’d ever like to pivot and create a multi-language site we recommend giving Polylang a try. You might also check if a plugin like Max Mega Menu can accommodate item descriptions or something of that nature: https://wordpress.org/plugins/megamenu/.

    Thanks, Andrew.

I expected this was more than a quick change and will continue working on it. Unless my coding skills evolve pretty quickly, I’ll very likely just go with Max Mega Menu since it does have the ability to display the menu descriptions.
