widgets on blog page

Hi there.

I noticed that with page builder I can add widgets to pages, but for the life of me, I can’t do the same for the blog page.

What I wanted was to add a search and a cloud tag (for categories) on top of blog page, but I can only do it for any other page but this.

Here is an example of what I want at another page.

And here is my blog page without it.

But I cant do it for this page, even though there is a section at the editor for adding content (widgets) via page builder.

Is there a solution for this?

Thx

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Mariano

Thanks for reaching out. To achieve this you’ll need to deselect the Blog page as your posts page at Settings > Reading. Once that’s done, go to Pages > Blog and insert a Post Loop widget in the Page Builder tab. Now you’ll be free to insert whatever content you’d like around the Post Loop widget.

Or to make use of the sidebar area, set your page template on the Blog page to Default. Once that’s done widgets at Appearance > Widgets > Sidebar will display.

    Hope that helps.

Hi there Andrew… that for helping. I followed your instructions, set up a loop post but for some reason the posts per se are not being displayed.

Here is a link of the page so you can have a look and see what I did wrong.

    Hi, I Work Here

The challenge with the post loop widget is that it’s very specific in what files it can use to power it. It looks for theme files as follows:

    loop-*.php
    *-loop.php
    content-*.php
    *-content.php

Where * can be any string.

It sounds like there isn’t a template file in your theme that can power the Post Loop widget. In future we’ll be introducing a standalone blog loop widget that has it’s own templates built in.

When you set a page to be your posts page, WordPress doesn’t allow any other content on that page. The only other way forward I can think of is to put your categories and search widget into the left column. You could use a plugin like Jetpack Widget Visibility to set them to only display on the pages/posts you want:

Hi there again Andrew… so, If I understood it right, in the case of my template I cant do what I want (having the categories and search displayed before posts)… I can only set them to show at the sidebar (I already did that once before but that doesnt really work for me)?

Is there any estimate for that standalone template's development?

Anyway, thx for your help and attention.

    Cordially,
    Mariano

    Hi, I Work Here

That’s, unfortunately, correct. You could perhaps seek out a third-party plugin that has a widget that can output a feed. Perhaps something like Query Wrangler?

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/query-wrangler/

Unfortunately, not something we can assist with. It’s perhaps a 30min job. Child theme and re-work an existing loop template to fit with the naming convention I mentioned. Codeable.io could do it if you’re interested. Try a plugin route first thoug.
