Just created my fourth website the Vantage Premium and I’m hearing about using a Child Theme for the first — it is not in documentation.
Having the problem with Vantage not remembering numbers — like changing font size. So obviously I need to upgrade. Followed WordPress tutorial and Andrews code:

But I get this message on theme page:
vantage-child Template is missing.
Additionally, I most need the update because I’m fighting number issue, but being told it already installed. Not finding any directions on 1) how to check my current version 2) what the current version is 3) how to install update.
I’ve gone from raving fan to raving mad. Really worried about what’s happening with my other three sites.

Sorry to hear about your frustration.
It’s only really necessary to use a child theme if you’re doing some fairly serious customizations. For most users, the custom CSS editor gives more than enough power to make the changes you need. What are the customizations you’d like to make with your child theme? If it’s just minor tweaks, then don’t worry about creating a child theme.
To answer your other questions.
1) To check what version you’re using, navigate to Appearance > Themes. Hover over Vantage and click “Theme Details”. This will show you your current version.
2) The most up to date version of Vantage is 2.3.1.
3) To update Vantage, first make sure you have your order number entered. If you’re using a version before 2.3, then navigate to Settings > General in your WordPress admin and enter your order number right at the bottom. If you’re using version 2.3 or later, then make sure your order number is in Appearance > Theme Settings, under the Premium tab. Finally, navigate to Dashboard > Updates and you should see an update for Vantage available.
