Video not playing on Android nor iOS7

Hello,
I have added a couple of posts to my site and each one has an embedded Vimeo video. Neither one will play reliably on my Android Samsung S4. When I click on the play icon, the screen goes blank and a playbar appears for a fraction of a second, then it goes back to the previous screen. If I then try again, it might work – it’s a bit hit and miss. I’ve checked this with the built-in browser and Chrome.

The videos (in posts) play ok on an iPad running iOS7, but the video in the slider/header does not play – it just displays a still frame from the video. That header video is not hosted on Vimeo – I uploaded it to the usual WordPress Media library. It’s a ~2MB MP4 (H.264 compression).

All videos play OK on a Mac and PC on Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

– Paul

    Hi Paul

Sorry to hear about the hassle.

Could you perhaps move the site back to Influence so we can take a look?

    Thanks

    Hello Andrew,

I’ve changed the theme back to Influence, and the problem with the header/background video remains. In my earlier post, I stated that “it just displays a still frame from the video” – this is not the case – it just displays a solid colour – whichever one I’ve chosen from the Influence theme settings > Home Page > Home Slider.

Confirmed. The entire slider doesn’t display in iOS.

    Hi, I Work Here

Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look? You can create the account with the following email address:

    [email protected]

Just navigate to Users > Add New in your WordPress admin. Enter siteorigin for the username and [email protected] for the email address. Make sure you’ve selected Administrator for the role and enabled the “Send Password” field so we receive the details.

Once we’re finished taking a look, you can delete this account. We’ll let you know when to do that.

    Hi, I Work Here

Apologies, I should have caught this right away, it’s been a while since I’ve worked on Influence. The background video is hidden for mobile because mobile browsers don’t render background videos. The fallback is to edit your slider and add a background image. When the video gets dropped for mobile the image will be displayed.

Ah, that’s a bit annoying – backgroud videos not playing on mobile browsers. Is that the case for iOS, too?

I thought I could maybe do a workaround, so I tried using the SiteOrigin video widget near the top of the page, but IIRC there was no option to autoplay and loop it. Also, I wasn’t sure how I could lose all the padding around the widget so it filled the top section of the screen (like the slider video currently does).

    Hi, I Work Here

Yes, iOS too, as far as I know.

Unfortunately, for the moment, the slider’s widget fallback is a static background image.

Inserting a video widget into the same position would require a child theme and a little custom development. It needs to be added before the content. It’s a little beyond what we can offer, even on our paid themes. Sorry I don’t have better news on this.

    Thanks for that information, Andrew.

Ah well, I’ll settle for the static image! (Although I’ll probably end up making a child theme and tweaking it a little. Maybe I’ll experiment with some video layout stuff, too).

    Hi, I Work Here

    For sure :)

All the best with your site. To go the child theme route you’d need to create a new widget area where the slider is now but only for the home page.

All the best with your site.

    Cheers
