I have built my site using site origin for quite a number of pages. This was a few months ago and everything worked brilliantly. Over the last month we have had issues updating the SiteOrigin pages. If you change something and publish changes it reverts back to the visual page and looses the SiteOrigin settings. I can export the layout as a backup but then it won’t import. Sometimes even reverting to an old save does not restore the page to being in a SiteOrigin layout.
We have everything up to date and I have tried turning off all the plugins except for the SiteOrigin ones and it still happens.
Any ideas?
SiteOrigin page reverts to Visual/Text whenever updated

Hi Maverick Publishing
Sorry to hear about the hassle. If there are any pending updates at Dashboard > Updates, run them. Then move onto the important test below. Let us know how it goes.
This sounds like it could be a plugin conflict issue. Can you try disabling all non-SiteOrigin plugins and see if this fixes the issue? If it does fix the issue, then try re-enabling your plugins one by one until the issue comes back. This procedure will help diagnose which plugin is causing the issue.
Once we know that, we’ll be able to look at what might be causing the conflict and either solve the problem or help you find an alternative plugin.
Hello
Sorry for the delay in replying to your reply – I have been away.
I tried this and it made no difference?
Also on a slightly different point (but may be related), the banner/slider on our home page seems to have done a weird duplication thing…this only started recently. However I daren’t make any changes/check the homepage, as if I do it will revert to the visual as explained in the above message.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi Maverick Publishing
Would it be possible for you to create a temporary admin account for us so we can log in and take a look? You can create the account with the following email address:
[email protected]
Just navigate to Users > Add New in your WordPress admin. Enter siteorigin for the username and [email protected] for the email address. Make sure you’ve selected Administrator for the role and enabled the “Send Password” field so we receive the details.
Once we’re finished taking a look, you can delete this account. We’ll let you know when to do that.
Hi Andrew
Have just done as instructed. There wasn’t a box to tick to send password, but hopefully it may have sent!
Thanks
Mmm the mail doesn’t seem to make it through to the forum. Please, can you manually send our password using the Private Reply checkbox below the form field.
Thanks.

Thanks. Please, take a quick look at this page:
http://www.maverickbooks.co.uk/wp-admin/post.php?post=12183&action=edit
Try editing the widget and saving it. Is the problem occurring there?
I’m having the same issue, would like to know what the resolution is.
Hi Laura
We’d like to help you, but can you please start a new thread with your question? We can only offer you the best support possible when you’re the owner of a thread.

Hi Andrew
It worked on the test page – tried it on another and reverted back to text again. Thanks for your help so far.
Thanks for confirming. Let me dive into those existing pages now and take a look.
Can you quickly confirm the page you were testing on?
http://www.maverickbooks.co.uk/portfolio/not-without-my-whale/
It is in Text/Visual mode as wouldn’t revert back to previous saved version, which used site origin. I am also unable to import siteorigin layouts (gets stuck on the loading bar).
Thanks
There is, unfortunately, nothing that can be done to recover from this situation. It looks like you have Revisions disabled. If they were enabled we could try rolling back to a version that contained working Page Builder content. Right now, if you click on Page Builder, it should ask if you’d like to move your content into a Visual or SiteOrigin Editor widget. The same type of widget basically.
1. Do you know when this problem first occurred?
2. Does your host keep backups of your site that can be restored on request?
3. How much new content has been added since the last potential backup point?
You can either look at re-building the Page Builder pages OR look at rolling back the site.
What happened? This is a super rare situation. It’s possible a plugin conflict resulted in the data shift.
Oh dear that doesn’t sounds good!
1. This started occurring about a month ago, but to be honest our website pages are not updated a huge amount. So could have been before.
2. Yes, but I have done quite a few things behind the scenes recently as we were hacked (maybe this did something to the plugin?)
3. Probably not a lot page/project wise, but other things have.
I don’t know what could have happened. I did upgrade to the latest plugins/wordpress awhile back, but I always check they are compatible.
Is it possible to turn on the ‘Revisions’ and then export all of the layouts and then reimport them? Is the fault with the importing layouts also linked to this issue?
Thanks for your help – really appreciate it.
Upgrading is great. When it comes to our plugins and the WordPress core, we have issues when users don’t upgrade.
Let me check the importing issue now.
Turning on WordPress revisions now won’t help us as the revisions function isn’t logging changes till we turn it on.
How many pages are we talking about that were previously in Page Builder?
Prebuilt import, I see the issue. No magic answers there, we, unfortunately need to do standard troubleshooting there:
1. If there are any pending updates at Dashboard > Updates, run them.
2. De-activate all non-SiteOrigin plugins.
3. Test.
4. If resolved, re-activate plugins one by one with a test after each plugin activation.
I would say about 40 – 50, as each book/project on the site uses a site origin layout.
If exporting and reimporting works then I am happy to do that, as that wouldn’t take me too long.
There isn’t a Page Builder layout to export though. When we move over to Page Builder we get asked to put all content in a single Editor widget. We could export that but it would import the same.
Can you reach out to your hosts and find out if they have backups. If they do, how far back do they go?
On the other pages though (just not the one I showed you) I haven’t saved them so it hasn’t reverted to the text/visual (for example the home page). So would those export?
I deactivated all the plugins except the siteorigin ones and it still didn’t import the saved layout.
I did try importing one of your siteorigin pre-built layouts and that worked (on a blank page). But then I tried downloading that layout and reimporting it and again didn’t work. Just gets stuck on the blue bar.
For sure. Try one out, see if it works. You can download the page layout by clicking Prebuilt > Export/Import > Download Layout bottom right. Same process to import.
I tried and it didn’t work – it gets stuck on the blue bar.
I’ll check shortly.
You’re using UpdraftPlus – Backup/Restore right? So backups should be taken care of.
Which plugin adds the “Projects” custom post type? Is it the theme or a plugin? Thanks.
I will have to check with the Updraft plugin, as I don’t know how far it goes back in the remote storage. I have a horrible feeling that it is not that far.
The ‘projects’ comes with the Jetpack plugin.
Thanks for the update. Can we please try this:
1. Activate maintenance mode. I see you have a plugin for that.
2. De-activate all plugins except SO Page Builder and SO Widgets Bundle if you’re using that.
Let me know when that’s done. I’ll take another look.
If you’d like us to try doing this on your behalf, please, let me know.
I downloaded jetpack last night and it crashed site origin. When I deactivated jetpack all my page builders came back. Just FYI.
Hi Laura
We’re keen to help, but this is Maverick Publishing’s thread. On simple threads, other users are welcome to jump in if they have the answer. There is definitely no simple answer in this case.
One of the reasons we work one person, one question per thread is what you’ve laid out above. Each case is different. Maverick Publishing has been successfully using Jetpack and Page Builder side by side for some time now. Maverick Publishing’s Page Builder doesn’t crash. It has a legacy page issue and a pre-built page issue. If we work two users at once on the same thread it gets super complicated try to untie these sorts of challenges.
Please, open a new thread, I’ll be more than happy to help out tomorrow. We’re at GMT+2. Thanks.
I’m back online in an hour or so. I’ll run through new threads when I get back. I’ll bump yours to the top if there is one there. Thanks :)
Sorry it was out of office hourse. Please let me know when you are next online and I will do as you asked. Many thanks
Online. Let’s hit it.
Done! All deactivated except those two.
Thanks, working it now.
The problem with importing a previously downloaded Page Builder layout isn’t specific to your site. I’ve confirmed locally. I’ll log this as a bug. We’ll address it as soon as possible.
Not being able to import layouts from the directory is a theme level problem. It resolves when I change over to Twenty Fifteen.
During my changes back and forth my content was dumped out of Page Builder. This is usually a JavaScript conflict. Something in the theme, clashing with Page Builder, preventing the saving process from occurring.
Designer, your theme, is on version 1.0. So I take it that wasn’t updated recently? Is that correct?
You can re-activate plugins now, thanks.
As an absolute hack measure you might be able to switch to Twenty Fifteen, edit a project, save, close the page and then in another tab, switch back to Designer.
If you email me a copy of Designer to Private Snippet I’ll try figure out which version of Page Builder worked with this theme. Rolling back is a short/medium term solution.
Thank you – the theme doesn’t have any upgrades (I don’t think), so assume that there is a conflict somewhere when I upgraded WordPress/Jetpack/SiteOrigin.
No problem I will send that to you.
In the meantime….most of my widgets have disappeared??? I think the ones are missing are from the BlackStudio plugin…I know this is not your plugin, but do you know if I can get them back somehow?
Have you re-activated Black Studio?
If widgets are missing from regular widget areas, have you checked the Inactive Widgets area at Appearance > Widgets?
Yes it is reactivated….but I actually think the widgets that are part of the plugin are not appearing in the list.
None of the ones in the inactive bit are the ones I am missing.
I do apologise for causing you so much work!
No problem. Unfortunately, after de-activating Jetpack, we do need to re-connect it:
http://www.maverickbooks.co.uk/wp-admin/admin.php?page=jetpack
That might be the problem.
No it is reconnected
Which sidebar normally displayed on project pages?
http://www.maverickbooks.co.uk/portfolio/aerodynamics-of-biscuits/
At Appearance > Widgets. Which sidebar area should be shown on project pages?
The sidebar is ok on some pages: http://www.maverickbooks.co.uk/contact/. Can we isolate which instances and which widgets aren’t ok?
It should be the Visual Editor (Black TinyMCE) widgets….I think those may be the only ones that are missing.
Visual Editor is present under Appearance > Widgets.
Can you check the Text widgets in the Inactive Widgets area, use the arrow in each to drop them down and show the contents. Are any of those widgets required?
Which widget area are we targeting?
This is a private message.
Apologies. This is a crazy result. Twenty Fifteen doesn’t have these widget areas as they are theme created. However, when we switch themes, widgets that don’t have a new home should just drop into the Inactive Widgets area. There is no way that switching theme should cause content loss.
Would you mind logging into UpDraft and checking out the backup/restore situation. It’s worth checking out now that we’re dealing with this issue and the Page Builder/theme challenge.

Switching to a default WordPress theme is a core part of the standard WordPress troubleshooting process. You’ll find that advice all over the WordpPress.org forums. I’ve never seen widget loss from doing so. You could definitely try switching over to Twenty Fifteen and back again. Not sure it will help though.
(If possible, could you try saving Private Message for sensitive info. Thanks :) It helps keep the forum accessible)
I’m sort of at a loss for what do to next. The widget loss issue is relatively small in comparison to the 70 pages you have and can’t edit in Page Builder. I’m testing with Page Builder 2.2 and Designer 1.0 locally and can edit and save existing Page Builder content. I can’t re-create the challenge.
Let me export your content via XML and import on my side. I’ll see if I can edit it.
It’s possible that during the hack/restore there was a negative impact to the WordPress core.
I’m able to edit existing projects in Page Builder locally using Page Builder 2.2 and Designer 1.0.
Things we haven’t done yet:
1. Re-install Designer. It’s possible there is a file issue in Designer. Re-installing themes is also meant to be really standard. You switch to any other theme. Hover over Designer, click Delete bottom right.
2. Re-install from Appearance > Themes > Add New: Upload Theme.
3. Once we’ve ruled our a file issue then we’re left with the WordPress core being an issue or something specific to your hosting environment that I can’t replicate on my local machine.
It is a little bit of a headache! The widget thing is annoying but not the end of the world.
I will email you the XML files. Would it be helpful to tell you exactly what the guy did who sorted our site? Do you want me to send a few .json files as well, with the siteorigin layout of a few pages or will that come through the XML? As you can probably tell I am relatively inexperienced at the technical side of WordPress.
Thinking about it though, I do think it probably started when I updated WordPress and as you said could be a conflict between the theme and WordPress, and SiteOrigin is caught in the middle.
It’s a lot more than a little headache :) Not to be over dramatical or anything.
I’ve already downloaded the Projects section in XML format and tested.
No need to send JSON files. The import bug is in Page Builder 2.2. I can’t import either.
So to confirm, I can operate your theme, your content all with Page Builder and WordPress 4.3.1. So the question then comes, what’s different between my local install and your server install.

Hi again. If you’re chatting with theme support can you perhaps mention that the following should fix the warning message we’ve seen the theme throw:
/lib/post.php line 119 is currently:
it should ideally be:
I’m not certain this will fix the Page Builder challenge but it’s a really good place to start.
