Self hosted video on mobile phone issue

Hey there,

I am in the process of creating a private/member’s only video library for a company. Very simple and very basic. Self-hosted videos only.

I am still getting familiar with the nooks and crannies of WordPress and it’s capabilities. Focus Premium seems to be making this project a bit easier.

However, I seem to be having issues with the embedded Focus video player on my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3, and have also tried viewing my site via other smartphones to play the video. There isn’t an option for full screen/maximize. Is there a way to change the settings to automatically maximize when visiting the video post(s)?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Traci

    Thanks for reaching out.

I ran a quick test on iOS now (iPhone). Once I hit play the video opens up in full screen view, just like YouTube would, there is an option to play the video smaller too. Testing done in Chrome. I have those options if I embed a self-hosted video via the Focus Video plugin, found under the Visual editor or if I embed a self-hosted video via the Add Media button in the regular Visual tab.

I can ask one of the guys here to test on Android tomorrow. Did you test in iOS?

    Hello Andrew,

Thank you so much. I have only tested on multiple Android devices, not iOS as of yet.

    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for the feedback. I think we’re all good on iOS. Focus is using jPlayer for those videos. Let me get Braam, one of our devs, to test on his Android device. We’ll report back a little later today.

    Hi, I Work Here

Hey Traci. Thanks for the wait. Just a quick update to let you know we see the problem. We’re going to look into it further tomorrow. We’ll start by upgrading jPlayer, the player being used in this case, hopefully that contains a fix for Android. We’ll let you know as soon as we have more.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Thanks for the wait :)

    Background:
So unfortunately the news isn’t great right now. At the time of creation Greg used a player called jPlayer (http://jplayer.org/) to handle the self-hosted videos. WordPress uses Media Element (http://mediaelementjs.com/) for it’s player now. We would have used that but WordPress wasn’t using it at the time.

    What we tried:
We hoped that jPlayer had sorted the Android problems out so we tested with the latest version. They haven’t. So unfortunately upgrading jPlayer won’t resolve the problem.

    What now?
We’ve logged a bug report to try look at alternative solutions for the medium term. For the short term we unfortunately don’t have a fix. All we can suggest for the moment is that you perhaps consider hosting those videos on a service like YouTube or Vimeo.

    OR

Forgo the Focus Videos plugin and insert your self-hosted videos into the regular Visual tab. That will use the default WordPress player. Media Element.

    Hi,
I know this thread is a few months old, but I am having the same problems (self-hosted videos will not play on iOS7 or Android devices). I am trying to have a background video auto-play on my site:
    http://iambiscuit.com/
The background video plays perfectly on Mac or PC (using various browsers) but just shows a black panel on iOS7 or Android devices. I have not tested it on any newer iOS8 devices

Has there been any progress sorting this problem out?

    Many thanks,

    Paul
