Post Loop load pre-caching featured images

Hi,

Great theme. Love it. Thanks for your hard work.

My question is regarding the Post Loop. I have a Post Loop on the home page setup as a Carousel Slider.

By default it can show about 4 featured images, and the 5th most recent one hasn’t loaded yet (only a small sliver of it would be visible even if it was). This is fine, but as I scroll/slide to view more posts, it doesn’t load the featured images automatically. It waits until I have scrolled 3 of the 4 featured images off the list before loading the 5th until the 8th.

Until it has loaded more images, it looks like I only have 4 posts because no title or image is loaded as I keep scrolling. The problem happens again when I try to scroll past the 8th most recent post as well.

Is there anyway to have it load the featured image for the next post before the user scrolls such that when they scroll it is already loaded?

Thanks,
Omar

Sorry I forgot to mention, I’m aware “Posts per Page” setting which can pre-load more, but the problem will occurs at the end of this number instead of the default 4. I guess I’m looking for a more general way for it to always pre-load more than just what is visible.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Omar

It’s definitely something that could be looked at.

We do have a newer Carousel Loop here in our Widget Bundle: https://wordpress.org/plugins/so-widgets-bundle/. I’m testing locally so I’m not sure whether caching is better. Perhaps take a look for me and see if it’s any improvement on the original Carousel template in the Post Loop widget.

    Hey Andrew,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have dropped both sliders on my site beside each other for comparison if you care to take a look. I’ll remove it in 24 hours.

    The new one
    – has a higher default posts per page of 10 instead of 4 giving the false deception that it does cache better
    – there’s a bug so it appears to not load anymore posts after scrolling to the end of this default.
    – the image scaling is different so that it tries to minimize truncation but skews the image
    – there is a weird flicker and change in image quality (from sharper to blurry like the conversion of a gif to png) one second after hovering over the image.

    Cheers,
    Omar

    Hi chaps,

    Love the carousel!

I thought I’d reply to this post as it is relative to my question. I have my post number set to 20 on my carousel. What I would like clarification on is whether the featured images are cached and not called every time someone opens the page with the carousel on it. We put the carousel onto a new page at the weekend, recieved a massive hit of new visitors and our server fell over! (We are upgrading the server this week – It needed it anyway), but I got asked the question and haven’t been able to find the definitive answer.
Our server guys have asked me to clarify how it actually works.

I am using W3 TC with the site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Apologies if I should have started a new post but this did seem very relevant to my question.
