Make Navigation Menu Anchors instead of page links

By Pilar Davis, 8 years ago. Last reply by Andrew Misplon, 8 years ago.

Hi again!

I’m building the main pages of a new site only on the homepage. So the navigation bar would only link to sections further down the home page instead of to a different page like it usually does.

I do not see a way to link the navigation titles to anchors down the page. Help please??!! Thanks!! :D

I have premium running on several sites I’ve built for people but I don’t have premium on this site yet since it’s still on my server but I will upgrade to it when i transfer the site to my clients server. The page is not live yet. It’s only on my server so I can’t give you a link.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Pilar

Thanks for your support. If you add Custom Links to your menu instead of Pages you’ll be able to do this. If you can’t see Custom Links in the left sidebar then click Screen Options top right and make sure they are enabled.

    Hi Andrew!
I dont have a custom links tab on the left or in the screen options. are you sure that’s not only in the paid version. Im working in the free version of Vantage theme on my local server so that I can just upload the completed site to the client.

    Hi, I Work Here

Glad to hear you’ve made progress :) Vantage Free vs Premium will only affect theme settings, never anything in the WordPress core like the menu management system.

    All the best :)

I hate to be a bug but I tried to add the link coding and it didnt work. Am I doing it correctly?
    1. I clicked on Custom Links
    2. I named the link Events
3.I then added the URL http://localhost/#first
    4. I put the link next to the text I wanted the link to jump to.
But nothing happens when I click the navigation label.
    Help?

    Hi, I Work Here

We’d ideally need to see the site live to help further.

Is your ID correctly placed in the page? Can you send us the source code for where you’ve placed the ID first?

    A. This is the text I have in the URL box under Custom Links. – Events
    B. This is the text where the link is supposed to stop. EVENTS

I’ve put (A) under both the URL line and the Label Name line and neither worked.
I’ve tried Div commands for both parts as well and that didnt work either.

These links need to work on every page. Meaning, not just while on the homepage. If someone navigates away from the homepage they need to be able to use the Menu Navigation to get back to that anchor spot on the homepage.

haaa :) sorry the links actually turned into links

    <a href="#first">Events</a>

    AND

    <a name="first"></a>

    Hi, I Work Here

Thanks for the feedback. Hash is an ID, so:

    <a name="first"></a>

    needs to be:

    <a id="first"></a>
