i had edited the file parts/footer.php to get some new text at the bottom of my site.
today i looked and it was back to the original code.
my changes were reversed
does this happen because the theme and files automatically update themselves?
not sure what to do … thanks!
Hey Greg
All WordPress.org themes overwrite their own folder during theme updates. To safely modify theme files you’ll need to use a child theme. Here is starter child theme for Vantage:
https://siteorigin.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/vantage-child-starter.zip
You can install via Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme.
For any Custom CSS tweaks you want to make, rather use SiteOrigin CSS. For edits to any other theme files you can copy (not cut) the file from the parent theme folder to the child theme folder. This needs to be done using FTP or Hosting File Manager. Once stored in the child theme folder your edited file is now update safe.
When activating a child theme it’s normal for menu location settings and Customizer settings to reset, they just need to be saved again.
Hope that helps.
