Drop-down menu in widget

Hello,
I would like to create a widget that is a drop-down of all posts from a single category ordered by the time they are posted.

I have tried the solution described here: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/drop-down-list-of-posts-from-a-category?replies=23, but it just renders my website blank & tells me there’s a parsing error in the functions.php file on a line above my inserted code.

Can you help me to add this widget?

    Hi BBrz

    I have wrapped this into a plugin for you which you can download here.

    http://test.magistercs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/category_widget.zip

    Please remove all your custom entries and upload and enable this as a plugin.
    You will then have a new widget called ‘Category Posts Widget’. Just insert this on the page where needed.

    Hi Alexa,

    I would not feel comfortable posting this to the repository as it was just made from code supplied by someone else. I would not like to steal the credit for the code or the idea. Doing this was just the best way of dealing with the issue without having to customize any theme files.
