Drag & Drop into a Layout Builder Widget

Notice: This thread is over two years old; the information may be outdated. Please consider creating a new thread if you require free support. If you have an active SiteOrigin Premium license, you can email our premium support desk at [email protected].

We have a quiet complex page in 4 languages.

To make the columns look like this https://www.switchplus.ch/it/casa/ we need to move contents from different rows and colums int a new layout Builder Widget within a new Row (see http://d.pr/i/AQ5i)

But since the Layout Builder Widget is a new modal window, there is no way to drag & drop.

Any hints on how to save existing contents into a layout builder widget to make drag & drop possible?

Or any other Ideas on how to do it?

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Chzumbrunnen

A hack might be, before adding the Layout Builder, click Prebuilt Layouts, Import/Export, download the page layout. It’s a JSON file you can save to your desktop. Then within the Layout Builder, click Prebuilt Layouts > Import/Export and import your layout.

    Hi, I Work Here

A long form way might be to do this. You need three layout files to import into three Layout Builders.

    1. Create three new pages. These will be our templates.
    2. In each page click Prebuilt and clone this entire page: http://d.pr/i/AQ5i.
    3. In each page delete all the widgets and rows that you don’t need for the Layout Builder. So each page is a template for each Layout Builder. Three Layout Builders, three templates.
    4. Once complete, download the layout for each page.
    5. Go back to your original page. Click Screen Options > Revisions, enable. Make sure we have revisions on in case we need to roll back from this.
    6. Delete all the widgets that will go into Layout Builders.
    7. Create our new rows and insert our three Layout Builders.
    8. Use our three downloaded layouts and import them into each Builder widget.

We’ll have more in the future to enhance these tasks. For now, this is all I can think of.

Thanks a lot for your hints.

Did it the complicated way but am very happy for the idea to save the layout for future use.

    Hi, I Work Here

Nicely done! It’s definitely a hack/workaround for now. In the future we’ll have a better way to handle templates and move layouts. Glad to hear you were able to get the work done.

    All the best :)
