Contact form not working

I have activated the contact form and inserted the widget into a page. It does not work. It does not send messages.
I notice that when i select it it does not have a blue cog in the righthand corner like my other active widgets.
The widget is shoeing in the enabled list.

When i try to send a message i just get a red error box “error sending mail please try later”
