is there any way to change the navigation through older/newer posts to arrows like this theme http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/autofocus/
instead of the “older post” / “newer post” button?

I haven’t tried it but there is also an additional plugin called WP PageNavi Style that looks like it might offer further styling options.

It’s possible with a child theme but it’s a much more involved process. There is also no styling ready for custom pagination in the theme’s CSS file.
You don’t need the WP PageNavi styling plugin, just WP PageNavi will do. I tested it before my first reply. 2mins and you’re up and running.
