All in one Security plugin conflict

I’m having an issue with the all in one plugin conflicting with the Vantage theme. When I activated the plugin I was no longer able to get to any pages on the website other than the home page. I got an error message saying that the page wasn’t found on the server.

Has anyone else run across this problem? Unfortunately I ended up having to delete the plugin since I couldn’t use it. This is one of the best, if not THE best security plugins I’ve ever seen for website security, and I don’t know what I’m going to replace it with. My websites have been hacked twice now and my accounts shut down, and this plugin is the only one so far that has prevented further intrusions.

Any ideas anyone? I really like this theme but if there isn’t something that can be done to rectify this situation I may not be able to use it. I would much rather have site security than a theme any day.

The website I’m having the issue with needs to be functioning fully so I can’t give you a url to see the issue. I will put in the url of the functional site without the plugin though. I also want to buy this theme btw because I need full portable device functionality, but I need to see if there’s a solution first. Thanks evetyone: http://www.azgroutbusters.com

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi Johnironbear

Do you get the same issue when switching to a default WordPress theme? You could temporarily switch to check. This isn’t the kind of thing I’d expect Vantage to interfere with.

If you still get the issue using a default WordPress theme then you could try contacting the plugin developer for help.

Another solution might be to try a different security plugin like this one https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-wp-security/

    Hi Greg,
I know, I didn't expect it either. I use it on over 20 different sites and it works fine on all of them but Vantage. I was using the Better plugin but it doesn't offer everything that All In One does. It has malware scanning,
brute force protection database protection, and you can even change the login from wp-admin to whatever you want. That alone stops brute force attacks because the bots can't access the login.

    Hi Johnironbear

Sorry to hear about the hassle.

To confirm that Vantage is indeed the problem, please, could you try testing with all plugins de-activated except for:

    All in One
    Any plugin made by SiteOrigin

So leave the above plugins ON, Vantage activated and de-activate all other plugins.

Please, let me know how that test goes. Thanks :)

Will do, thanks. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Hi Andrew,
I checked it out yesterday and it looks like the source of the issue is a little more complicated than I originally thought. I shut down all plugins and started All In One Security and it seems to be fine with the theme and all of the other plugins except Bulletproof Security. When I have both running at the same time it somehow changes my Permalinks setting and the pages are no longer accessible. I had to shut them both down and delete them and reset the Permalinks. Btw, the permalinks setting shows that they're still the same but they aren't.

Interestingly I run those two plugins along with Wordfence on all of my websites (on a dozen different themes) because they all provide different functionality and have never had an issue, so there has to be something within the theme that's causing it.

Anyway, for now I'm going to only use All In One and not BPS or WF because it has more security functions and that should be fine. I don't want to change themes because my client loves the site and I like the theme. I will have to find another plugin though if I want more security in the future.
Which reminds me, I need to go upgrade to pro so she'll have a mobile menu.
The site is at http://www.azgroutbusters.com if you're interested. It's about 95%
    done.

    Hi, I Work Here

Super, thanks for the detailed feedback. I’ve got both WordFence and BPS running locally.

    1. Is there anything specific I need to do in terms of their setup to try replicate the issue?
    2. NB question: Have you tested with WordFence and BPS running alone? No other plugins, just those two and Vantage?
    3. Did you clear your caching plugin before de-activating plugins and do the above testing you spoke about?

    Thanks :)

Hi Andrew,I'm so sorry for not getting back to you earlier.
The emaiI got pushed down into the pile and I spaced it out. I haven't retested again as my client get's pretty pissed if the site goes down even for a millisecond, but as
I recall I didn't run just BPS and Wordfence alone. The last time I had the issue the only one running was All in
One and it was fine by itself, but when I kicked BPS off it triggered the problem. I did clear the caching plugin..
that's one of the first things I do on site and on my browser too whenever I run into problems.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    John

    Hi, I Work Here

No problem. If at all possible you’d need to try arrange a time to put the client’s site into maintenance mode and test. Perhaps things quite down with their traffic later on in the evenings. I’m not able to tell much more from your feedback. Thanks for the effort though.

So to confirm, I was able to run WordFence, BPS and Vantage locally without any issues. You’d need to test as follows:

    1. De-activate all plugins except for for WordFence and BPS. Test.
    2. If the issue resolves, slowly re-activate your plugins.
    3. Run a test after each activation.
    4. When the issue re-occurs you would have found the conflicting plugin.

I'm going to be working on it later today so I'll try that and let you know what happens.

    Hi, I Work Here

Super. A mission but, unfortunately, the only way to dig deeper.

The general idea with this sort of troubleshooting is to strip away until the problem goes away and then add back till it re-occurs. We strip away in one go. If the problem doesn’t resolve with all other plugins OFF then the test has failed.
