Afraid to update Vantage theme

Noob question…
My website uses the Vantage Premium theme, and I have a bit of custom CSS code that I have entered into the Custom CSS box under Appearance. I read the warning about losing any custom coding if I update my theme, and the recommendation to use a “child theme” to avoid any problems.
I am obviously new to this, and therefore I am a little confused, so I want to make sure I understand what is being said and what will happen etc when/if I update my theme.
When they talk about custom code being lost, are they referring to this bit of custom code I have entered under Appearance/Custom CSS, or are they referring to code a person would enter directly into the CSS files themselves, or both? Also, does this “customizing warning” apply to customizing I have done under Appearance/Customize too?
Thank you for your help.

    Hi, I Work Here

    Hi touchstone,

The major reason we introduced the custom CSS editor was to give users an upgrade safe way of making changes to their site. You won’t lose any code you’ve entered here. They’re stored safely in the database.

That notice specifically means changes to the actual code of the theme itself. So if you edited the style.css file in your server. An update essentially deletes the old copy of your theme and reinstalls the updated version. That’s why you lose file changes.
