Customize Header Menu with North?

Absolutely LOVING the north theme. But trying to customize the menu at the top a bit. I am using a bright background color and the gray links get lost. I can change the color to white but they lose hover effects. When I try to add hover effects through CSS, I lose their “clickthru” ability.…
