Vantage wrapper width wont change

Hi,
I am using boxed layout within a child theme and having trouble getting the width to change, have searched the site and applied suggested css which should work:

body.responsive #page-wrapper {
	max-width: 960px !important;
	padding-top: 0;
}

Can’t understand why this isnt working as it appeared to work in other posts, padding style is working and has been applied to both the header and footer to remove space. Also tried to add box shadow to the page wrapper which also has no effect.

    Managed to get both the width and shadow to apply using Edit CSS within Jetpack as this was suggested in an earlier post. Any reason why this wouldnt override using a style.css file within the theme. If anything its easier to edit the css directly with the jetpack module so no reason for me to go back but would be good to know the technical reason of why it wouldnt work.
