Thanks SiteOrigin, so I updated your vantage theme as WordPress kept pestering me to do. Your update completely wiped all the customization and resulted in me flipping out so much I deleted the who frigging site just to start again – as when I restored the backup it messed up metaslider.
So thanks for nothing.
What is the point in creating a update to a perfectly working theme?
And by the way I’ve been coding for 15 years and using WP since version 1 and I can honestly say there are ways of performing an update without wiping every single customisation. This is sheer lazyness and a classic example of poor website development on your part. Thanks for costing me my evening.
Hi Rye
Thanks for the feedback, and very sorry to hear you lost your customisations. Unfortunately we have absolutely no control over the core WordPress update system. This is controlled by WordPress.org, if you’d like to voice your concerns and push for an improved updates system – https://make.wordpress.org/ – I for one would love to see a diff based update system in WordPress some day :)
WordPress introduced a concept called child themes back in 2010, around version 3.0. This feature allows you to make customisations to your site without losing those changes when you update.
This is a good introduction to using Child Themes: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-themes/how-to-update-a-wordpress-theme-without-losing-customization/
Or our own guide: Page: Child Themes
Alternatively, we created a plugin called SiteOrigin CSS that allows you to make simple CSS customisations that persist across updates: https://wordpress.org/plugins/so-css/
And to answer your question. We update our themes with compatibility and security fixes as they become necessary. We also introduce new features from time to time.
