I’ve set up an alternate page layout with two rows, and the bottom row having 2 columns. The top row is a Post Loop (PB) widget that has the 5 most recent posts in a slider. The bottom row on the left column is supposed to be just the most recent post, and on the right column is archives and other meta-info.
However under the most recent post on the left column is page navigation that allows you to go back through previous posts one by one. This would be ok if it went to the individual post directly, but what happens is the page layout stays with the two rows and now the slider in the top row is just a big empty space above the post. Or sometimes it contains 1 or 2 recent posts, but not the 5 most recent as it’s supposed to.
If you click one of the recent posts in the slider it goes to the single post view with previous/next navigation, no slider row at the top, and all works as expected.
I would like to be able to remove the navigation from the Post Loop (PB) widget so that at least on the home page layout I have, it won’t show up and have the potential to screw up the layout when a visitor uses that to navigate instead of going through the archives.

Under the post loop settings for your most recent post, change the template to content-single.php this will remove the navigation.
