I need to arrange thumbnails in multi-column next to main product image

Hi everybody,
I have managed to set the thumbnails to the left side of the main product image (in product page), but in some cases I have many thumbnails, which will go down and form a LONG column, how can I arrange them in smaller columns in the same place… same hight as main product image….. I also couldn’t get rid of the padding on top of the thumbnails.
