WordPress makes it really easy to create drop down menus. There are times where you might not have content for the top level menu item, for example:
Parent Menu Item
– Page One
– Page Two
– Page Three
In this instance you might, for example, only have content for Page One, Two and Three. You’d still like to have a drop down menu but visitors shouldn’t go anywhere if they click on the Parent Menu Item. Setting this up is easier than you think, here is how:
Under Appearance > Menus add a Link instead of a Page for your Parent Menu Item. You’ll find Links right under the Pages item in the left menu. To insert a Link you’ll be asked to enter a URL and Link Text, for now insert a hash (#) as your URL and the desired text for the Parent Menu Item, click Add to Menu. Now that your link has been inserted into the menu you can remove the hash in the URL field. Done! Use that link as your top level menu item and it won’t be clickable.

Does parent menu item have to be a page? That’s an ok solution, but for me it still leaves behind a long url link to sub pages. For example in my case I use three sub items/pages for portfolio categories.

I would like to shorter url link to send to potential customers

Is it possible to eliminate parent page completely and just use the menu item for navigation to drop down menu only?
Thank you for your advise, my website is improving!

Hi Jeff
In my tutorial above I’m using a Custom Link as the parent menu item so there doesn’t need to be a parent page at all. That’s the main focus of this task, to make the parent item a Custom Link so we can remove the URL and not have it clickable.
In your sub-pages you can use the right column drop down menu to remove the parent page and thereby shorten the link.
Thanks for the info andrew very helpful
For sure :) Glad that did the trick.
