I can’t disable theme slider because all Appearance > .php files read “You need to make this file writable before you can save your changes. See the Codex for more information.” and changing permissions is beyond my capabilities. Please advise.

Bought premium, which meant I then had access to custom.css. Fixed my problem by adding following code:

#slider {
display: none;
}
