Adding a hover effect to all hero widgets

Hi there,

I am using multiple hero widgets throughout my site and I was wondering how I can add a hover effect (photo be dark until hover, then brighten) to all the hero widgets using custom css. All hero widgets have a background photo with text overlay. I am using the optimizer theme.
