Black transparent overlay on hover

Hi there! I found another thread that sort of gets what I want, but I’m trying to make it a .5 black overlay on hover for the tiles on this main page (instead of the image going .5 transparent). Is this possible? http://cateringwebdesign.com/cortinas/
