Hot can I customize an inactive theme?

Probably missed something very obvious….

I already have a theme with a customized CSS made the old-fashioned way.

Now I’m planning to change to another theme and create a customized CSS for that theme – but, I want to do that work in the background, so my old theme will still be Active, and I will work with the new theme when it’s inactive.

What should I do?
