Copyright Requirements

By James Mark, 9 years ago.

Hello, I am a student entering a local technology fair in the website creation category. I have decided to use a pattern created by SiteOrigin’s background generator: http://bg.siteorigin.com/
However, the tech fair rules require for all third party media to be cited and have written permission from the copyright owner. This also applies to opensource copyright licenses such as GPL, GNU, Apache, ect. I am aware that the background generator is a joint creation of SiteOrigin and Subtle Patterns, so who exactly should I inquire of for written permission of use? Or should the opensource copyright license (which is GPL 2) be counted as written permission?

Apologies if this is the wrong place for such a question; a help forum seemed like the best place to ask as I don’t want to accidentally pester the wrong people for help. I’ve seen enough programming jokes about that already.
