Snapshot Documentation

Snapshot is a sleek, minimalist block theme crafted for photographers, designers, and other creatives who want a fast, beautiful way to showcase their work. Responsive masonry layouts, eye-catching featured images, and intuitive block patterns make it easy to build galleries, portfolios, and landing pages without code. Snapshot remains fully compatible with the Classic Editor, Classic Widgets screen, and SiteOrigin Page Builder; whether you work in blocks, the Page Builder tab, or a SiteOrigin Layout block, the theme adapts to you.

Installation & Activation

There are two primary ways to install and activate the Snapshot theme:

  1. Install via WordPress Admin Search: In AppearanceThemesAdd New, search for “SiteOrigin Snapshot”. Click Install, then proceed to activate the theme.
  2. Install via ZIP File Upload: Download the siteorigin-snapshot.zip file from the SiteOrigin Snapshot page on WordPress.org. Ensure the file remains in its compressed (.zip) format. At AppearanceThemesAdd NewUpload Theme, upload the downloaded siteorigin-snapshot.zip file, then proceed to activate the theme.

Once installed, click Activate and visit the front end to view the default layout.

Snapshot requires WordPress 6.0 or newer.

Working With Editors

Snapshot is designed to work seamlessly across various WordPress editing environments, providing flexibility for your preferred workflow:

  • Site Editor: Visually design your headers, footers, and templates by navigating to Appearance > Editor.
  • Block Editor: Fully compatible for creating rich post and page content using blocks.
  • Block-Based Widget Area: Manage your widget areas and insert blocks into them by navigating to AppearanceWidgets.
  • Classic Editor: The Classic Editor is fully supported for post and page content, providing the familiar TinyMCE interface.
  • Classic Widgets: For users who prefer the traditional widget management interface, enable the Classic Widgets plugin to manage your widgets at AppearanceWidgets.
  • SiteOrigin Page Builder: Integrate Page Builder into your content creation in several ways:
    • Insert a SiteOrigin Layout block anywhere within the Block Editor to build complex layouts.
    • Use the dedicated Page Builder tab in conjunction with the Classic Editor plugin when editing a post or page.
  • SiteOrigin Widgets: All widgets included in the SiteOrigin Widgets Bundle are available as individual blocks, making them ready for use in any block-editor-driven page.

Global Styles

Open the Styles panel in the Site Editor, then choose StylesBrowse Styles to toggle between the Dark and Light schemes. Adjust colors, typography, and spacing globally from the same panel.

Templates & Layouts

  • Front Page: Static homepage with a post slider.
  • Home (Blog): Latest posts plus sidebar.
  • Single Post: Standard, No Sidebar, Full Width, and Full Width + No Sidebar.
  • Page: Default page template with sidebar.
  • Archive and 404 templates.

Select templates per post or page in the sidebar under Template.

Header

Edit the Header template part to upload a logo, adjust the Navigation block, or switch to the Mobile Menu Always pattern. The header is sticky by default; you can disable stickiness in the parent Group block’s Position settings.

The default footer has three columns (About, Recent Posts, Latest Photos) plus a copyright bar. Replace or rearrange blocks as needed in the Footer template part.

Sidebar & Widgets

The Sidebar template part ships with Recent Posts, Categories, and Tag Cloud blocks. Edit or remove these in the Site Editor, or choose a No‑Sidebar template for full‑width pages.

Static Home Page, Blog Page & Posts Slider

Option 1: Latest Posts as Home Page

  1. Go to SettingsReading.
  2. Select “Your latest posts”.
  3. Your home page will now display your blog posts automatically.

Option 2: Static Home Page with Posts Slider

  1. Create a new page for your home page.
  2. In the page editor, click the + (Add Block) button.
  3. Go to Patterns tab and search for “Posts Slider” or “hero”.
  4. Insert the Posts Slider pattern at the top of your page.
  5. Add any additional content below the slider.
  6. Go to SettingsReading and select “A static page”.
  7. Choose your page as the Homepage.

Option 3: Static Home Page + Separate Blog Page

  1. Create a page for your home page (add Posts Slider pattern if desired – see Option 2).
  2. Create another page for your blog (leave it empty – WordPress will populate it automatically).
  3. Go to SettingsReading and select “A static page”.
  4. Set your home page as Homepage.
  5. Set your blog page as Posts page.

Note: The Posts Slider pattern can be inserted into any page or post using the block editor; it’s not limited to the home page.

Insert patterns via the + inserter > Patterns tab.

Snapshot integrates smoothly with popular WordPress plugins:

  • SiteOrigin Page Builder: Works seamlessly with all Snapshot templates, providing robust page building capabilities.
  • Widgets Bundle: Adds a collection of powerful widgets/blocks that are fully compatible with Snapshot.
  • WooCommerce: Snapshot is WooCommerce ready, providing comprehensive styling for your online store.

Additional Tips

  • Optimize large photographs for faster loading.
  • Snapshot is translation‑ready; the free Loco Translate plugin makes string translation simple.
  • Create a child theme for extensive code customizations.
